It was announced at New York Comic Con that an animated series adaptation of the bestselling book franchise Artemis Fowl is coming to Disney Channel and Disney+.

It will follow the 13-year-old genius Artemis Fowl, who “uncovers an underground world of armed and dangerous — and surprisingly high-tech — fairies as he launches a plan to capture one and steal its magic to heal his dying mom and save his family”. Author Eoin Colfer will serve as an executive producer for the show alongside Ben Juwono and Colleen Evanson.

“For more than two decades, Eoin Colfer’s ‘Artemis Fowl’ books have captivated readers around the world with unforgettable characters, imaginative world-building, and gripping adventures,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family. “Bringing this beloved franchise to life as an animated series allows us to introduce a new generation to Artemis’ world while honouring the longtime fans who have cherished these stories for years.” Colfer added, “I am proud and delighted to be part of the formidable team that is putting the ‘Artemis Fowl’ animation on screen. Everyone is so talented and so positive that I feel certain the fairy world is in excellent hands.”

The first book in the franchise was published in 2001, with 10 additional novels adding to the series so far. The latest came out in 2021. The series has been sold more than 35 million times worldwide in 48 different languages. There has previously been a live-action film adaptation based on the first book, which debuted on Disney+ in 2020, although it received negative reviews and subsequently was removed from the streaming service in 2023. It was directed by Kenneth Branagh and starred Colin Farrell, Judi Dench and more.
