Comments

When you leave a comment, we collect what you enter in the comment form, plus your IP address and browser details — this helps us catch spam.

We may send an anonymised version of your email address (a “hash”) to Gravatar, to check if you have an account there. You can read Gravatar’s own privacy policy at automattic.com/privacy. If your comment is approved, your profile picture will be visible alongside it, publicly.

Media

Avoid uploading images that contain embedded location data (GPS info stored in the file). Anyone can extract this data from images on the site if it’s present.

Cookies

  • If you comment: you can opt to have your name, email, and website saved in a cookie, so you don’t have to re-enter them next time. These last one year.
  • If you visit our login page: we set a temporary cookie just to check your browser accepts cookies. It holds no personal data and disappears when you close your browser.
  • If you log in: we set a few cookies to keep you logged in and remember your display settings. Login cookies last two days (two weeks if you tick “Remember Me”); display-setting cookies last a year. Logging out removes the login cookies.
  • If you publish or edit a post: an extra cookie stores the post’s ID number only — no personal data. It expires after a day.

Embedded content

Some articles include embedded content from other sites (videos, images, etc.). That content behaves exactly as if you’d visited the original site directly — meaning that site can collect its own data, set its own cookies, and track your interaction with it, especially if you’re logged into that other site already.

Who we share data with

If you request a password reset, your IP address is included in the reset email.

How long we keep your data

Comments (and their associated data) are kept indefinitely, so genuine follow-up comments from you can be recognised and approved automatically rather than held for review.

If you register an account on the site, we store the profile information you provide. You can view, edit, or delete this at any time — except your username, which can’t be changed. Site administrators can also view and edit this information.

Your rights

If you have an account, or have left a comment, you can ask us for an exported copy of the personal data we hold about you. You can also ask us to delete it — except where we’re legally required to keep certain data for administrative, legal, or security reasons.

Where your data goes

Comments are checked through an automated spam-detection service.
