According to reports, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reached a staggering $927 million worldwide, the second-biggest debut after Avengers: Endgame, which grossed $1.2 billion in its first weekend.

It was always going to do well, with people incredibly excited by seeing Spider-Man on the big screen, but to be that close to Endgame is undoubtedly a massive achievement. It managed to bring in $573 million at the international box office and $355 million from 4,487 North American cinemas (which was only a couple of million from breaking Endgame’s domestic record).  No other films have ever come close to surpassing $300 million in a single weekend in the USA, with the closest being Spider-Man: No Way Home at around $260 million. It’s not bad going when you consider Sony spent around $225 million to produce the film, although that does not include marketing costs. It feels insane that the film even got close to Endgame, a film with years of build, but it just goes to show how much people enjoy Tom Holland in the role.

Another interesting element of the Box Office this weekend is how well the film has done when you consider its Box Office alongside The Odyssey, as they look to have produced the biggest collective weekend in box office history alongside Toy Story 5, Moana, and Minion & Monsters. Although I was surprised to see that The Odyssey is sitting at $911 million worldwide, given how hyped it felt upon first release. It looks likely to become Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film of all time, but the fact that Brand New Day outgrossed it in its opening weekend shows that, despite doubts, superhero movies still have an unbelievable amount of pull compared to director-focused epics.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is in Cinemas.

We believe what actually happened rarely matters as much as what it felt like to sit there and watch it. A film can tick every technical box and still leave you cold. Another can be a total mess and somehow be one of the best nights you’ve had all year. We’re more interested in focussing on the second one.
