There has been an exciting update on the next potential film in the National Treasure franchise from director Jon Turteltaub.
Fans have been waiting for a new film ever since The Book of Secrets was released in 2007, to no avail. There was a completely underappreciated TV series, known as Edge of History, which was set in the same universe on Disney+ in 2022, but unfortunately it was cancelled after one season. It’s a massive shame because the series had a lot of potential and, in the eyes of many, was wrongfully cancelled too soon.

The first film was released in 2004 and grossed $347 million worldwide which is pretty impressive for the time. It starred Nicolas Cage and Diane Kruger as two historians who become tangled in a plot to steal the Declaration of Independence, which is actually a map to a secret treasure buried by the Freemasons. Other cast members include Justin Bartha (who also appeared in the TV series), Sean Bean, Jon Voight and Harvey Keitel.
Turlertaub, who directed the first film, told a live taping of the ‘National Treasure Hunt’ podcast that “It’s happening. I have not said anything before this, but you deserve to have the scoop. It’s finally real. Now, it’s ‘Hollywood real,’ meaning things could happen. Nic gets hit by a bus, there’s no ‘National Treasure 3.’ If I get hit by a bus, there’s probably a ‘National Treasure 3.’ Welcome to Hollywood.” He added that the audience was “the first people I have said this out loud to.”
This is brilliant news for fans of the franchise, especially after Cage’s return to mainstream prominence with appearances in things like Longlegs and Spider-Noir. We just have to wait a little longer to find out more!
