Last week, the first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday was released online, offering fans their first major look at Marvel’s next epic crossover.
According to the synopsis, beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered. We now know that this existential threat is Doctor Doom, the famous Fantastic Four villain. Interestingly, he will be played by a former stalwart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Robert Downey Jr. It’s unclear at this stage how this will be explained in-universe, with a lot of fans confused by the decision when it was first announced back in 2024. There are numerous theories about how he will be involved in the story, but fans are waiting to see if there’s any reference in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day before they get too excited.
Reaction to this trailer is mixed so far, with lots online excited about the teased return of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and his interaction with Thor (Chris Hemsworth). There was also excitement for the on-screen return of the likes of the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts/New Avengers, the kingdoms of Wakanda and Atlantis, and the original cast of the X-Men (Welcome back James Marsden Cyclops). Unfortunately, it’s still incredibly unclear what the plot is going to be and how we’re going to end up with the traditional high stakes that come with Avengers movies.

It’s fair to say 2026 is shaping up to be a crucial year for Marvel after a few years of mishaps, in both their television and movie output. There’s a lot of anticipation for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and it could be a crucial bit of momentum-building going into the December release for Doomsday later this year. Of course, it could also have an even more negative effect on the franchise with cinema goers seemingly more interested at the moment in original indies like Backrooms or director-driven efforts like The Odyssey.
Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo; produced by Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito and Jonathan Schwartz; and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Wyatt Russell, Channing Tatum, Simu Liu, Ian McKellen, Tom Hiddleston, James Marsden, Patrick Stewart, Joseph Quinn, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Letitia Wright, Lewis Pullman, Kelsey Grammer, Kathryn Newton, Danny Ramirez, Winston Duke, Alan Cumming, Hannah John-Kamen, Rebecca Romijn, Mabel Cadena, with Tenoch Huerta Mejia.
Avengers: Doomsday releases in cinemas on the 18th December.
