Destin Daniel Cretton (Spider-Man: Brand New Day) has joined an upcoming film adaptation of Hawaii Five-O at Paramount Pictures, according to a Deadline report.
The report states that he will develop the project to direct, alongside Chris Bremner (Bad Boys For Life) and Noah Oppenheim (Jackie), who are writing the script. The deal was put together in agreement with the estate of original series creator Leonard Freeman. It went out to Paramount first due to rights around the original series. It’s worth noting that the studio had no comment at this stage, but that doesn’t mean things aren’t moving fast, with the report stating that this one is only just beginning to build momentum.

Hawaii Five-O was a massive hit for CBS from 1968 to 1980 and starred Jack Lord as Steve McGarrett, the no-nonsense police task force lead for Hawaii. It was shot on location, and may be more recognisable to younger audiences thanks to its iconic theme song. In recent years, there have been other attempts to bring the show to the big screen, but they haven’t been successful. There was a CBS TV remake from 2010 to 2020 starring Alex Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park.
It’s hard not to assume that most of Hollywood will be after Daniel Cretton at the moment after the massive success of Brand New Day. It seems to be breaking records by the day at the moment as it closes in on the billion-dollar domestic gross mark and reaches $2.4 billion in global ticket sales. He’s also known for directing the often unappreciated Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings and was involved in Wonder Man before its cancellation.
