Production on the upcoming season of the Netflix live-action adaptation Scooby-Doo: Origins has wrapped. It will be the first time in the franchise’s history that the title character will be played by a real Great Dane.

The show is being described as a modern reimagining of the iconic mystery-solving group of teens created by Hanna-Barbera. This version will show the gang during their final summer at camp when old friends Shaggy (Tanner Hagen) and Daphne (Mckenna Grace) get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely, lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. Together with Velma (Abby Ryder Fortson), and Freddy (Maxwell Jenkins), they set out to solve the case that pulls each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.

The franchise was created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears in 1969 for the now-iconic Hanna-Barbera, which also created The Flintstones and Tom and Jerry. It originally aired on CBS from 1969 to 1976 before moving to ABC. Since then, there have been numerous iterations of the franchise, from feature movies to spin-offs. I still think particularly fondly of Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase, which came out in 2001. Although most people my age are more nostalgic for the two previous live-action films, Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.

For the Netflix production, Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg serve as showrunners, writers, and executive producers. With Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson, and Toby Haynes also executive producing. Other cast confirmed to be appearing include Paul Walter Hauser, Rusty Schwimmer, Peter Macon, Jona Xiao, Dani Deetté, Elysée Sanvillé, Alex Isles, Avery Kristen Pohl, Pamela Mitchell, Ross Kimball, Sara Gilbert, Wynn Everett, Sauriyan Sapkota, Bruce McGill, André Benjamin and Cathy Moriarty.

Scooby-Doo: Origins will premiere in 2027, but there’s no word yet on exactly when.
