Over the weekend, the first trailer for Mr Irrelevant was released to coincide with the start of the new NFL season. It stars David Corenswet in the lead role. The film tells the story of John Tuggle, the running back who was given the moniker of ‘Mr Irrelevant’ after being the last pick of the last round in the 1983 NFL draft.

Tuggle became the first player in league history to make the NFL team that drafted him, despite being picked last. He defied expectations on the field and off for his then first-year head coach, Bill Parcells (Michael Shannon), his newfound love (Isabel May) and his team, proving that remarkable hope and perseverance can transcend even the greatest challenges. Sadly, he died a few years later from cancer but was known for leaving behind an enduring impact on his team and those around him.

There is a lot of buzz building around the film as a result of a series of really high test scores. With screenings so far apparently receiving perfect 100s from women over 35 and 95s from men over 35. It is widely believed that the film’s director, Jonathan Levine, got the coveted gig as Director of Days of Thunder 2 as a result of the already established hype around the movie. Emmy-nominated writer and Reacher showrunner Nick Santora wrote the script and produces alongside Levine and Gillian Bohrer. The film also co-stars the likes of David Krumholtz, Tuwaine Barrett, Thaddeus LaGrone, Alexander England, Spencer House and Tandi Wright.

I can’t help but think this is going to be absolutely brilliant. It looks incredibly moving just from the trailer alone, with Corenswet undoubtedly going to get a lot of praise for his performance. Here’s hoping it reaches a bigger audience than just fans of the NFL, as these types of sports movies always end up being an incredibly inspiring watch.

Mr. Irrelevant is in cinemas from Christmas Day.
