According to Deadline, Gareth Edwards will not be returning for the next instalment in the Jurassic World franchise over creative differences, leaving the studio searching for a new director.
Stars of Jurassic World Rebirth, Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali are all expected to return for the next movie, which they hope to shoot in 2027. David Koepp penned the most recent draft of the script. Rebirth was a massive hit for the franchise, grossing $872 million worldwide, including $340 million domestically, and there was hope that Edwards would return to direct. Instead, the studio has released a statement on Thursday saying, “We had an incredible experience working with Gareth on Jurassic World Rebirth.”

It’s not the first time the franchise has chopped and changed directors, with five different core groups of actors/directors over the years. Some may have crossed over with each other, but it’s still worth noting that this is a normal scenario for the franchise, even if disappointing to fans of Rebirth and, of course, Gareth Edwards. Previously, we have seen the likes of Steven Spielberg, Joe Johnston, Colin Trevorrow, and J.A. Bayona also direct films in the franchise. It will be interesting to see who they pick for the next instalment, and if Jurassic World can maintain its momentum amongst fans.
