According to Deadline, Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) is in talks to direct a follow-up to the 2003 film The Italian Job.
For those who don’t know, the film was directed by F. Gary Grey and starred the likes of Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron and Edward Norton. It follows John Bridger and his team as they are betrayed by their teammate Steve during a heist, which results in his death. Soon after, Charlie convinces Bridger’s daughter to join the team and seek revenge for her father’s death. The film received attention for its action scenes that saw the characters speeding around in Mini Coopers. At the time, it was described as a ‘homage to the original’, which came out in 1969 and is widely regarded as a cult symbol of British filmography.

According to the report, nothing is confirmed yet, with the studio (Paramount Pictures) currently seeking writers. This means it’s possible that the project doesn’t come through, but it will be interesting to see if it does. The 2003 film collected $176 million globally to mark the studio’s highest-grossing release of that year, although the reaction to the news of the sequel seems to be a bit mixed online so far.
Feig is best known for directing Bridesmaids, before more recently directing the sleeper hit The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney. He is currently working on a sequel to that film (The Housemaid’s Secret), which will be another adaptation of Freida McFadden’s work. He is also due to helm the horror movie Detention for Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
