Apple TV were the clear winner of the Primetime Emmys this year, winning an incredible 28 awards. It’s only the second time in 20 years that a platform besides HBO Max or Netflix has led the Emmys. Those two platforms won 21 and 16, respectively.
The main factor behind Apple TV’s success was the comedy Widow’s Bay, which won 14 trophies. Before the start of Monday night’s ceremony, it had already won eight times before picking up another six in every category it was nominated for. Those included outstanding comedy series, lead comedy actor (Matthew Rhys), supporting comedy actor (Stephen Root), supporting comedy actress (Kate O’Flynn), comedy writing and comedy directing. This combined tally of 14 wins means that Widow’s Bay has won more Emmys in a single year than any comedy series in history. The previous record was held by The Studio, which won 13 last year. Apple TV also won awards for Pluribus, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Palm Royale, Slow Horses and Mr Scorsese.

Another brilliant story that came out of the night is that star of Widow’s Bay, Matthew Rhys, won two lead acting Emmys on the same night. The other was for his work in Netflix’s The Beast In Me. He’s now the only person in history to claim both lead actor prizes in a single ceremony as well as the only male performer to win all three lead acting categories (having won for The Americans in 2018). There have been performers who have won two acting Emmys on one night before, but neither for the lead categories.
HBO Max came in second place this year with 21 Emmys thanks to DTF ST Louis and The Pitt winning seven awards each, with Prime Video also doing really well (with the now-cancelled Spider-Noir winning 5). Importantly, the revival of The Muppet Show won four, meaning they might finally get their continued deserved return to the centre stage.
