According to Variety, Hulu will not be going ahead with a second season of its recent comedy Not Suitable For Work, which was created by Mindy Kaling (The Office).
The series debuted on Hulu and Disney+ in June for nine episodes. It starred Ella Hunt, Avantika, Will Angus, Jack Martin, Nicholas Duvernay and Jay Ellis. According to the show’s logline, the story follows work-obsessed 20-somethings striving for professional success and, if they have time, personal happiness in Manhattan’s most glamorous neighbourhood, Murray Hill. It also featured a fun array of cameos from the likes of Victor Garber, Greg Germann, Judy Gold, Ego Nwodim and Constance Wu.

It got quite mixed reviews from people who watched it. Claude De Pear for The Feature felt that it had a lot of promise but struggled to prove it was something different from a lot of other similar sitcoms out there. He wrote that “it fell victim to the first season curse despite its best efforts. The cast all had hilarious moments, but the show needed a second season to truly take off“.
The show marked Kaling’s first sole creator credit on a project since The Mindy Project, which was a big hit for Hulu when it first launched. She went on to have numerous successes with the likes of Never Have I Ever, The Sex Lives of College Girls and Running Point. Not Suitable for Work was produced under Kaling’s Kaling International label in association with Warner Bros. Television, where both Kaling and showrunner Charlie Grandy hold overall deals.
