Gwyneth Paltrow is set to take on her first-ever lead television role in A24’s The Apology, which has landed a two-season deal with Netflix.
Directed by Thomas Vinterberg (Another Round), the series will see Paltrow play Evelyn Amspoker, whose son was murdered 18 years ago in a cold case that gripped the nation. When a stranger suddenly appears and confesses to the crime, justice finally seems within reach. However, Evelyn and her husband, Caleb, soon discover that the killer could receive a reduced sentence. Faced with the possibility of seeing their son’s murderer escape a harsher punishment, the couple decide to take matters into their own hands.
The series comes from creator, showrunner and writer Joe Murtagh, who will also executive produce alongside Joe Hipps of Cut To, Paltrow and Vinterberg.

Despite her successful film career, which includes starring in the Oscar-winning Shakespeare in Love and the recent Oscar-nominated Marty Supreme, Paltrow has yet to take on a leading role on television. Her previous small-screen appearances include guest roles in Ryan Murphy’s Glee and The Politician, making The Apology her first major foray into television as a leading star.
Netflix’s two-season deal for The Apology comes amid a period of change for the streaming giant, following reports that 6% of its workforce would be laid off and the departures of chief content officer Bela Bajaria and head of film Dan Lin.
