According to The Hollywood Reporter, John Leguizamo has joined the exciting cast of Miami Vice ’85 as the main villain.
The film will be based on the TV series, which starred Don Johnson and Phillip Michael Thomas as two undercover Miami police officers known for their love of fast boats and pastel suits. In this version, however, it will be Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in the lead roles as Ricardo Tubbs and James Crockett, respectively. It will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-’80s Miami, inspired by the pilot episode of the original show.

It’s going to be directed by Joseph Kosinski, who has previously directed Top Gun: Maverick and F1, with production aiming to start in November in both New York and Miami. Producing the project are Dylan Clark and Kosinski. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay before it was finalised by Dan Gilroy. EVP Production Development Sara Scott and Creative Executive of Production Development Christina Hoffrogge oversee the project for the studio.
Leguizamo is widely expected to play a cartel boss in what marks a full-circle moment for his career, having appeared in multiple episodes of the original show in the 80s at the start of his career. He received a lot of praise over the summer for his role in The Odyssey, from Christopher Nolan, which has since become the highest-grossing feature of all time for the studio (with around $1.68 billion at the Box Office). He is soon due to appear in an untitled feature project from the Daniels (Everything Everywhere All at Once) alongside his Odyssey co-star Matt Damon. As well as also appearing in the upcoming horror reboot The Exorcist: Martyrs from Universal and Mike Flanagan.
Miami Vice ’85 is set for release on May 19th 2028.
