Netflix have released the long-awaited first trailer for Greta Gerwig‘s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, and you can watch it here.
Long before the wardrobe, there was a lion. In Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, Academy Award-nominated director Greta Gerwig will sweep you away on a new adventure, travelling back to the origins of Narnia in the first-ever adaptation of the 1955 novel of the same name by C.S. Lewis.
The film was adapted for the screen and directed by Gerwig and introduces newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell as Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer, alongside an all-star cast including Meryl Streep, Daniel Craig and Emma Mackey.
Set before The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the novel was the sixth published of the seven Chronicles of Narnia books and follows two children who find themselves ensnared into experimental travel via ‘The Wood Between Worlds,’ with the story showing Narnia and our world to be two within a whole multiverse, with the book also featuring the creation of Narnia by Aslan the Lion.

Gerwig has put a fresh new spin on the world of Narnia, calling the adaptation a ‘fantasy rock-opera’ with the trailer being set to Led Zeppelin‘s ‘Stairway to Heaven’, showcasing a stunning new world like no other. Many have been quick to question Greta’s unconventional portrayal of Narnia, but after creating Lady Bird, Little Women and Barbie, I had absolute faith in her, and this incredible first trailer shows I was right to!
Speaking of her admiration for the story, Gerwig said: “I was a child when I first read The Magician’s Nephew, and I fell in love with the gorgeously improbable but completely brilliant concept of a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life. I didn’t know that I would grow up to make films, but a universe built out of music is an idea that always lived in my heart. It is the honour of a lifetime to be asked to imagine it into being. Because of C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, I believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure. I believed that anywhere could be enchanted and that anyone could be swept up into an epic. That wonder and awe was available to everyone, even ordinary people like me … It transformed me.”
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew releases in IMAX in cinemas on the 12th February 2027, and on Netflix on the 2nd April 2027. Sneak previews only in IMAX begin the 10th February 2027.
