It will be the first true X-Men movie since Disney acquired Fox and its catalogue of characters. In the time since, several characters have appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), such as Deadpool and Wolverine and X-Men 97 (on Disney+), but this marks the first proper movie since Dark Phoenix. Other characters have also cameoed in films such as Patrick Stewart in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Fox’s X-Men movies were the first major superhero franchise to hit the big screen, in particular the original X-trilogy (which starred Stewart and Ian McKellen). The prequel films (released at a similar time to the early MCU) starred James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as younger versions of the same characters. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine was undoubtedly the breakout star of the franchise, appearing in both versions of the trilogies, as well as three standalone movies.
The X-Men movie will be released on May 5, 2028.
