A sequel to the cult classic Days of Thunder, starring Tom Cruise, has been announced over the weekend, with Anne Hathaway joining him in the film.
The first film, released almost 40 years ago, followed scrappy driver Cole Trickle (Cruise) as he gets recruited to a new NASCAR team by retired racing legend Harry Hogge (Robert Duvall). It also featured the likes of Nicole Kidman, Randy Quaid and John C. Reilly. Fans have been rooting for a sequel for a while, especially since F1 came out, with fans hoping for some sort of crossover between Trickle and Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt).

At this point, plot details are scarce, but it’s believed that Hathaway, fresh off a career-successful year, is set to play a race car team owner and engineer. A lot of fans are excited about Hathaway joining the film; however, it appears original star Quaid isn’t. He wrote on X, “We need Nicole back. Don’t be a pussy, @TomCruise. You need the original girl. It’s not personal; it’s filmmaking. Anne isn’t sexy, because, if you haven’t noticed, she’s pregnant.” Luckily, Randy isn’t in charge of the project.
Jonathan Levine (Mr Irrelevant – the film not an insult) is due to take over directing duties from Tony Scott. Cruise is producing alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper. It will be shot for IMAX screens, and released exclusively in cinemas for formats including Dolby Cinema and 4DX. Claude De Pear for The Feature is excited about the potential for a 4DX screening of the film, having missed out on seeing F1 in 4DX at the time due to not realising how epic the experience can be.
