According to Deadline, John Mulaney is being lined up to play the role of Agent Maxwell Smart in an upcoming reboot of Get Smart.

It wouldn’t be the first attempt at a reboot. You may recall the previous version in 2008 starring Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway and Dwayne Johnson. It was a moderate success, earning $230 million worldwide against a budget of $80 million. I can’t recall the spoof plot too well, but I do distinctly remember a scene where Carrell makes a phone call using his shoe as well as talking to Bill Murray in a tree.

The original version of the show was created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry in 1965 and ran for 138 episodes. It was a slapstick spy spoof that followed the incompetent Agent Smart. It won seven Emmys over the course of its run, including three for Outstanding Comedy Series. There is hope that Mulaney can help bring the franchise back into the mainstream, although the project is still in very early stages. Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote 2025’s Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, is set to write the screenplay with Andrew Lazar and Chuck Roven producing.

Mulaney’s most recent starring role was as the host of Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney for Netflix, but he is best known for his work on Saturday Night Live (as both a writer and a host) and Big Mouth. He will soon be seen in Madden for Amazon Prime Video, where he will play Trip Hawkins, the founder of Electronic Arts.

We believe what actually happened rarely matters as much as what it felt like to sit there and watch it. A film can tick every technical box and still leave you cold. Another can be a total mess and somehow be one of the best nights you’ve had all year. We’re more interested in focussing on the second one.
