The first official trailer for Ali G: Who Iz I? has been released by Amazon MGM, featuring the on-screen return of Ali G (Sacha Baron Cohen).

It’s official synopsis reads, “after 20 years spent chillin’, tokin’ and bonin’, Ali G is shocked to discover that his long-term girlfriend, Julie (Morgana Robinson), is eight months pregnant Faced with an extra mouth to feed, he gets off his batty and heads to America to reclaim his former glory but soon encounters adversaries who will ultimately threaten his and his child’s very existence.“

The character was first developed as the titular character as part of The 11 O’Clock Show for Channel 4, before producing Da Ali G Show in the early 2000s. A feature film following the character, from Succession Director Mark Mylod, was then released in 2002. The project, Ali G Indahouse, really helped push Cohen to the mainstream with other projects, such as Bruno, Borat, and Who is America? soon following.

The project was first announced via an Instagram post in July, with the post being captioned in character as Ali G. “Dey haz finally made a documentary about me. And it ain’t dat crap one about da penguins, dis one haz got at least twice as much animal sex“. It will be interesting to see who the character talks to within the mockumentary, as the project, like previous projects, was filmed in secret in an attempt to get a natural reaction from onlookers.

Who Iz I? marks the directorial debut for Cohen, in which he also serves as writer and producer under his Four By Two Films Banner. Petr Jákl and Emily Kob are executive producers.

Ali G: Who Iz I? is in Cinemas on October 23th.

We believe what actually happened rarely matters as much as what it felt like to sit there and watch it. A film can tick every technical box and still leave you cold. Another can be a total mess and somehow be one of the best nights you’ve had all year. We’re more interested in focussing on the second one.
