Sony has released the first trailer for Jumanji: Open World, the third and final film in the rebooted trilogy.
This instalment reverses the series’ usual setup: rather than characters getting pulled into Jumanji, the game itself breaks out of its console and spills into the real world. The trailer shows the returning avatars as glitchy, unfinished versions of themselves, described in the footage as being “stuck in demo mode”, bringing the story a little closer to the tone of the original 1995 film. The third film follows the success of 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and 2019’s Jumanji: The Next Level. The franchise is a reimagining of the iconic 1995 original starring the late Robin Williams and a young Kirsten Dunst.

Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan all return as the game’s avatars, joined again by Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner, and Ser’Darius Blain as their real-world teenage counterparts. Jake Kasdan returns to direct, working from a script co-written with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. The two previous instalments have together grossed more than $1.7 billion worldwide.
Jumanji: Open World is set for a Christmas Day release.
