The original movie was first released in 1984, directed by Joe Dante, and was a huge box office smash with an incredible $212 million worldwide gross against a budget of about $11 million. The sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, didn’t do as well but is still widely considered a cult classic. The franchise is a horror comedy, with the first film following Billy, a young boy who receives a mysterious pet known as a Mogwai. Like many things, the creature comes with two rules: never get it wet and never feed it after midnight. Unfortunately, those rules are soon broken, causing an epic amount of chaos amidst his small town.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ president of development and production Jesse Ehrman said in a statement, “Few titles are as beloved and iconic as ‘Gremlins,’ and we’re beyond excited to bring it back for both lifelong fans and a whole new generation. It’s a privilege to be working alongside Steven [Spielberg], Chris [Columbus], and the entire creative team, and we look forward to audiences experiencing the next instalment of the magic, mayhem and heart of Gremlins on the big screen in 2027.”
Gremlins 3 is now releasing to cinemas on October 6th 2028.
