Over the weekend, Prime Video have revealed that Spider-Noir won’t be returning for a Season Two, despite its 11 Emmy nominations.

The show, starring Nicolas Cage, was the first Marvel-related series to premiere out of the Amazon deal with Sony Pictures TV to develop characters and stories from the “Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters“. It’s based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man Noir and, contrary to popular belief, is not the same character that Cage voices in the Spider-Verse animated movies despite the similarities.

It follows Ben Reilly (Cage) as a seasoned, down-on-his-luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life following a deeply personal tragedy, as the city’s only superhero. It also stars Lamorne Morris (New Girl), Li Jun Li (Sinners), Karen Rodriguez (The Hunting Wives), Abraham Popoola (Atlas), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), and Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin).

Interestingly, the show debuted with two different options to watch – in colour or in black and white. It was really popular amongst audiences, with the show earning 2.6 billion viewing minutes in the first six weeks. It received 11 Emmy nominations, the most of any Prime Video show this year, and also has a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. After the news broke, Cage told Deadline, “For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man.“

Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot were showrunners and executive producers, with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller also executive producing for Lord Miller, alongside Aditya Sood and Dan Shear. Amy Pascal is executive producer via Pascal Pictures. Cage and Pavlina Hatoupis are also executive producing. Harry Bradbeer directed and executive produced the first two episodes.

We believe what actually happened rarely matters as much as what it felt like to sit there and watch it. A film can tick every technical box and still leave you cold. Another can be a total mess and somehow be one of the best nights you’ve had all year. We’re more interested in focussing on the second one.
