The Odyssey has officially become acclaimed Director Christopher Nolan‘s highest-grossing movie, overtaking 2012’s Dark Knight Rises.
It’s currently at around $1.1 billion worldwide after four weekends ($461 million domestic and $643 million worldwide), which puts it just ahead of the Batman epic, which finished its run at around $1.085 billion. It also means that Nolan’s movies have now officially grossed over $7 billion worldwide combined, which is an unbelievable track record and just shows how much fans trust the Director. Interestingly, it also makes it the second-highest-grossing R-rated movie after Deadpool and Wolverine, and it also becomes the highest-grossing movie for Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson globally.

The film follows Odysseus (Matt Damon) as he embarks on a perilous journey to return home after the Trojan War. It’s getting huge praise from both critics and audiences, with a Rotten Tomatoes score currently sitting at 94%. It’s been praised in particular for its commitment to being filmed on IMAX, with fans flocking globally to see it in the way Nolan intended, with many screenings being sold out until September as a result.
For those wondering, it is the fifth film this year to reach $1 billion worldwide, with Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael, Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Toy Story 5 being the others. Brand New Day is currently getting the most talk with a $1.67 billion return in a very short time period, breaking records across the world for its speed in doing so. It’s one of eight movies to ever gross more than $100 million in its second weekend in the North American Box Office, which is a huge achievement.
