Henry Cavill has confirmed, via an Instagram post, that Mike Flanagan (Carrie) is joining his upcoming Warhammer adaptation as executive producer, showrunner, writer and director.
The news had been circulating for a while, ever since Games Workshop let it slip in a recent financial report, which also revealed that production company United Artists had come aboard to the project. Games Workshop signed its original licensing deal with Amazon back in 2024. The series, Warhammer 40,000, is set in a far future where humanity teeters between its brightest era and its darkest. The threats to humankind’s empire are many: traitors driven by the fires of ambition, alien empires sworn to reclaim the stars, and the corruption of reality by malevolent god. Vertigo executive produces alongside Cavill, GW’s Andy Smillie and Max Bottrill, and Amazon MGM.

Cavill wrote on Instagram: “Firstly, Natalie Viscuso and I are indeed bringing on Mike Flanagan to write the Warhammer live action series! We have already been working with him to craft the creative, and we’re making some considerable advances in story” before adding “Importantly, some of you have been asking if I will still be starring in the lead role in the live action TV series – rest assured, I most certainly will! Who that character is, however, shall remain a secret for now!”.
That wasn’t the only exciting news in the post. Cavill also confirmed a separate Warhammer 40,000 animated series is in the works, which he’ll executive produce. Coming from Amazon MGM Studios, Blur Studio and Games Workshop, the animated project will spin out of Secret Level, Prime Video’s adult animated anthology, which dedicated an episode to Warhammer in its first season. Details are scarce for now, but Deadline is reporting it’ll centre on The Deathwatch, the elite Space Marine unit tasked with hunting down alien threats.
